The Lost Parish Church: A Method for Representing Lost Spaces

The 3rd Parish Church was located in the Garden of Rest, but was demolished in 1949 due to bomb damage. Through archival research, it became clear that the remnants of the church were fragmented, leading to the idea of bringing them back together. 

Using the Garden as a case study, the handbook proposes a representational, ten-step method to re-present architectural spaces lost in war, natural disasters and demolition that respect the past but considering the future.

Reflecting on traditional craftsmanship – where the care and input of each creator is visible in the medium they used – and the contrast to modern media’s computer generated visualisations and the influence of AI, inspired a tactile approach. The proposed method aims to utilise scattered fragments of the lost place to produce new representations that embody their atmosphere and history for present and future generations to experience.
