JUST STREETS addresses a central challenge in sustainable urban mobility – street transformations often improve active travel yet fail to recognise how benefits, burdens and decision-making powers are distributed across different social groups. The Horizon Europe project brings together 32 partners and works with 12 European cities to develop streets that are safer, healthier, more inclusive and genuinely shaped by the needs of marginalised users. The University of Westminster leads research on street justice, combining distributive, procedural, recognition and capability perspectives with practical methods for participation and evaluation.

The team has developed actionable ideas for street justice, a pathway for embedding justice throughout project design, and a typology of interventions that supports active mobility and behavioural change. In London, the project works with local authorities, business improvement districts, community organisations and students through site visits, workshops and living-lab activities. By connecting conceptual research with real-world street interventions, JUST STREETS supports cities in moving beyond technically successful schemes towards transformations that are equitable, human-centred and transferrable across different urban contexts.
