Centre for Air Traffic Management Research Welcome to MORE 2026

CENTRE LEAD: Andrew Cook

The Centre for ATM Research builds on over 40 years of air, rail and urban transport research, consultancy and teaching at the University of Westminster. Since 1999, we have coordinated and led work across over 40 major European ATM research projects. These have been funded primarily through SESAR, EUROCONTROL, Clean Aviation and the European Commission (e.g. Horizon programmes), and carried out in collaboration with airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, and other research institutes. The Centre focuses on data-driven, applied research for industry and stakeholders. In 2026, the Centre was awarded four new research projects, totalling income of approximately €1 million for the School: ARCADE, SPARK, FairSky and Aviation delay, with Westminster leading the latter two. 

ARCADE will develop a set of information systems and decision-support tools that enable information sharing, common situational awareness and collaborative decision-making between airports and surface transport stakeholders. SPARK is the SESAR transversal European performance assessment project, with Westminster co-leading the development of new passenger and environmental KPIs. FairSky will provide a decision-support framework for assessing regulatory instruments such as route charge modulation and the inclusion of non-CO₂ emissions in the Emissions Trading Scheme, supporting the European Green Deal. Aviation delay cost benchmarking tool development will support cost-benefit assessments for all major European programmes and is tailored to the ATM Centre’s REF 2029 Impact Case Study. 

These new projects complement our on-going work as partner delivering the European SESAR Knowledge Transfer Network, Engage, in which by drawing on extensive partnerships with approximately 60 industry partners, we have promoted the integration of exploratory and industrial research. This has lead to the development of an ATM future concepts roadmap and driven the maturation of new concepts, such as currently leading catalyst fund activities, expediting the SESAR innovation pipeline.
