Acknowledging the importance of tourism as a leading economic and social force of the 21st century, and major metropolises and metropolitan regions as contemporary engines of economic development, innovation, and change, this large open-access volume brings together international perspectives on the growing relationship between tourism, cities and metropolitan regions.
Organised around three interconnected themes – spatiality of metropolitan tourism, politics and governance, and practices and representations – the book’s contributions combine conceptual discussion with case studies from metropolitan regions across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
It suggests metropolitan tourism constitutes a distinctive form of urban tourism and examines its implications for governance, policy and planning. Addressing an important gap in existing scholarship, the book considers how metropolitan tourism might be understood and managed in ways that are more sustainable, resilient and inclusive.
KEY WORDS: urban development; metropolitan tourism; governance; spatiality; urban transformation
