Collaborations in Making focuses on the innovative approach to collaborative physical making in both my teaching of MArch Design Studio 16 [DS16] and in practice as co-founding partner of AY Architects (2005-2026) and founder of Atelier Boulanger in 2025.

This model of collaborative making bridges architectural teaching and practice, providing students with a unique platform from which to interrogate materials, and initiate architectural concepts and building constructs. It supports the learning of practical and advanced skills and working methods with a ‘design through making’ approach, where the process of iterative material investigations, experimentation and testing is as important as the final outcomes.

Many of the projects are conceived, tested and installed at Grymsdyke Farm, a shared research facility located in Lacey Green, Buckinghamshire; a space and resource to develop innovative materials, models, products, prototypes and installations utilising traditional, digital and hybrid techniques. The methodology engages a high level of knowledge exchange between students, teachers, artists and professionals.

Material Cultures & Material Constructs [published as part of the School of Architecture + Cities ‘Studio as Book’ series in early 2026 and co-edited with DS 16 teaching partner Stuart Piercy] selectively illustrates the design studio’s ethos, teaching method, student work, research and knowledge exchange from 2011-2024.
