‘We are very practical.’ The BSc Architectural Technology integrates spatial, technological, environmental, material and detailing expertise to address architectural design challenges from inception to realisation. The course emphasises the synthesis of architectural design with construction technology, environmental performance, project management and the clear communication of technical intent, enabling students to engage critically with contemporary professional practice.

Rather than treating design and technology as separate concerns, students work within an integrated framework in which every design decision is interrogated against technical performance, environmental responsibility and buildability. Design projects are grounded in real sites, realistic constraints and sustained engagement with industry, including meetings with clients, visits to building sites and direct engagement with contractors and consultants. This is tested first in the design studio where alumni and industry collaborators contribute to regular design reviews and discussions, challenging students to position their work within a wider professional context. 

Our students have had the opportunity to visit leading practices including EPR Architects and Heatherwick Studio, where they learned about recent projects and the ethos of contemporary professional practice. Within the Professional Practice module, students were further enriched by sessions with developer Gus Zogolovitch, who engaged with them through project management role play exercises, bringing valuable real world insight into the teaching. In their final year, students also undertake a period of professional work experience, enabling them to reflect critically on the relationship between academic learning and industry practice.

BSc AT students have been actively involved in projects linked to the London Festival of Architecture, continuing a strong culture of public-facing work. These opportunities encourage students to test ideas beyond assessment, engaging with wider audiences and exploring forms of collaboration that extend beyond academia.

The ethos of the course carries throughout all years of study to prepare students to make meaningful contributions to the building industry upon graduation. Graduates emerge as early-career architectural technologists with strong technical competences, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Their professional independence equips them to operate confidently at the intersection of design and construction.
