Finite Impossibilities
Our studio speculates about landscapes of technological, social and environmental extremes, questioning the societal potential for change and imagined futures.
Citizens are inculcated most effectively thanks to the constructed, artificial environment we are obliged to move through and inhabit. These buildings and environments are saturated with flows of information, stimulation and sensation and, inevitably, because we are immersed within them we are subjected to the messages they emit. Basing our argument on the premise that contemporary society worships experience and educates its citizens to do the same, we asked: How might architectural design change the way experience is understood?
The fact that experiences are marketed and sold within the flow tells us flow and experience are not opposed but entangled. For that reason, they need to be approached dialectically through analytical and structured acts of imagination. We dreamt of formulating projects that would break entirely with the experience/flow entanglement, not merely occupy new positions within it. To give traction to our imaginations we looked at the theme of tourism, and asked: What is the element that makes a difference between tourism and work?
