The Three Kludges

DS[3]5 is characterised by the exploration of transdisciplinary design collaborations to create an expanded ecological framework for design.

Focusing our designs on the fragmented industrial landscape of Tilbury, Essex – specifically Tilbury Fort, the Port of Tilbury and the new Lower Thames Crossing due to open in 2035 – DS[3]5 continued to explore a transdisciplinary understanding of nature and technology as an indivisible whole, and the architectural project as one ecology. Adaptation and resilience are central to our design attitude, translating principles into experimental spatial propositions. Students tested methods for adaptation using simple three-dimensional geometries to track cycles of growth, change and decay.

Students were committed to making positive change to the ecological and social prosperity of the area. Using imaginative design strategies, they considered issues of pollution, alternative forms of learning and care, and the integration of biodiversity and new technologies. Challenging building typologies emerged, including: inhabitable remediation machines; a re-visioned vertical port; schools and facilities for collaborative construction, gardening, rehabilitation and play; and a new Windrush Memorial museum.
