BSc Architectural Technology Year 3 BSc Architecture
TUTORS: Sam Sam Hui, Tabatha Mills & Paresh Parmer
The final year advances from conceptual design to technical resolution, cultivating a practice that integrates innovation, precision and regenerative thinking to deliver architecture that is both buildable and responsible.
Following a field trip to Cambridge and a tour of Cambridge Central Mosque, Year 3 BSc AT students worked this year in collaboration with Year 2 students in Design Studio, focusing on the Southgate Mosque and Community Centre site in north London.
Students were tasked with analysing the existing site to inform the location and design of multiple buildings to address the brief, including the option of undertaking the retrofit of a listed building. In their final year of study, students are expected to produce long-span construction and take the project from RIBA Stage 0 to 4.
The brief asked for multi-use, flexible spaces to be incorporated at the mosque site, including ablution facilities and a main prayer hall. Students were additionally asked to design a facility for community sports activities with changing spaces, and to consider the sympathetic retrofit of an existing building in line with Historic England and Conservation practices.
The Year 3 Sustainable Design + Technology Research Project module worked alongside Design Studio, allowing students to develop an understanding and knowledge of a range of Architectural History and Theory, Architectural Technologies and current issues pertinent to Sustainable and Regenerative Architectural Design, through clearly structured and rationalised critical review.
Further modules enriched the students learning. In Construction Technology + Innovation they explored how innovative solutions can be applied to building design and environments to address contemporary issues; while in Building Pathology, through the identification of defects in a structure or building, students followed the trail of evidence and considered the potential consequences in order to provide a client with reasoned advice and appropriate action.
