BA Architecture Introduction Architecture BA (Hons)

Course Leader: Diony Kypraiou

BA Architecture at the University of Westminster is a call to act. In a world challenged by climate emergency, social inequality and rapid technological change, architecture must question, adapt and transform. The course treats design as a critical tool – testing how we live, work and relate to one another, and how futures can be reimagined through space.

Intellectually rigorous, creatively open and socially engaged, the course supports experimentation grounded in responsibility – to communities, to resources and to the planet. From the outset, students are encouraged to question assumptions, take risks and develop a position, understanding architecture as a set of relationships between people, materials, environments and cultures.

Studio sits at the centre of the course: a space for dialogue, challenge and collective production, where drawing, making and writing become tools for thinking. Complex and constantly evolving, London acts as an extended classroom – shaping how students observe, test and intervene.

Year 1 begins with action. Through projects such as Chair Re-Mix, students dismantle and remake, learning to recognise architecture in the everyday. Reuse, circularity and material awareness are introduced early on, before expanding into live urban contexts where projects engage directly with work, exchange and community.

Year 2 deepens technical and contextual understanding. Through cultural and technical lectures, the Site Diary module and a range of studio approaches, students begin to situate their work within broader environmental and urban systems. Fieldwork plays a central role, with site and practice visits connecting local observations with wider global conversations.

Year 3 consolidates and advances individual architectural agendas. Students define and test their own architectural positions through a major design project, dissertation and professional practice studies. Studio becomes a space for sustained research and authorship where ideas develop through iteration, discussion and resolution.

Architecture is a demanding discipline that brings together creative, academic and practical work. This year’s projects reflect that ambition – bold, thoughtful and forward-looking – opening up new ways to build, live and care.
