Final Thesis Project
Year 3 centres on a research-by-design approach that positions architecture as an integrated social and environmental practice. Students are encouraged to develop rigorous, evidence-based proposals, emphasising interdisciplinary thinking and regenerative design.
BSc AED Year 3 centres on the Final Thesis Project, a research-by-design studio that explores innovative approaches to performative architecture and the complex relationship between social and environmental contexts. Students deepen their understanding of architecture as a civic and environmental tool, alongside three complementary modules which enable students to explore the interplay between geometry, material systems and architectural performance
This year, the Design studio focused on how schools could be re-imagined as adaptive and resilient institutions in the context of the climate emergency. The studio was driven by a core question: how can institutions continue to fulfil their societal role while responding meaningfully to environmental crisis?
Education sits at the core of this investigation. Schools are viewed as cultural and spatial frameworks that shape values, behaviours and futures. Historically, they have served as testing grounds for new pedagogies and social models. In this period of increasing climatic uncertainty, the design module considers schools as critical sites for environmental transition, where architecture can support new ways of learning, living and adaptation for the communities of the future.
Working on sites in Deptford, London, students engaged with the unique social, urban and environmental conditions of the area and developed flexible, interdisciplinary and regenerative design proposals that position schools as catalysts for environmental and social transformation.
