BSc Architectural Technology Year 2 BSc Architecture
TUTORS: Tabatha Mills (year lead), Ian Casey & Jamie Ogilvie
Grounded in principles of care for people, place and resources, BSc AT Year 2 fosters an approach to practice that values adaptability, stewardship and meaningful social impacts.
AT2 students collaborated with AT3 in a complex vertical Design Studio project this year, focused on the Southgate Mosque and Community Centre site. They were invited to discuss the project with a group of stakeholders for the site, which aims to serve as a hub for spiritual growth, education and social cohesion in north London.
Inspired by a field trip to Cambridge and a tour of Cambridge Central Mosque, the students were tasked to design a community facility that incorporated a foodbank, community fridge and flexible spaces able to meet a variety of local needs as part of a live, on-going development project brief.
Within the Technologies of Architecture 2 module, particular emphasis was placed on Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). Through hands-on model making and testing in the CAT Lab, students investigated and compared proposed SuDS interventions with the Southgate site brief, against baseline scenarios with no mitigation measures. This process encouraged a more integrated and evidence-led approach to environmental design considerations.
The module was further enriched by input from a local authority water management specialist, who supported the students’ learning and provided valuable feedback during a dedicated studio workshop, allowing students to critically engage with and refine their design proposals.
To connect technical detailing theory from studio-based talks with practice, students visited an active construction site on Fleet Street, gaining insight into how Building Regulations are applied in real-world projects. This proved paramount to their own technical development as the year progressed.
Design work was reinforced by concurrent modules in Project Procurement, Management and Law, as well as Construction Engineering Technology and Structural Principles.
