Open Studio Westminster

Open Studio is an interactive project run by the School of Architecture + Cities at the University of Westminster to make its design, research and practice-based work available online while it is happening. The site acts as a real time teaching and learning environment in which the work of both students and staff is curated and documented – the work of its design studios, or its other teaching and research groups and workshops. The Architect Pitch: Crossing Boundaries _ Deadline for applications: 5th of June

Posted on May 28, 2019 by Mirna Pedalo
The Architect Pitch: Crossing Boundaries _ Deadline for applications: 5th of June

When: Thursday 27th of June, 5pm-8pm

Where: HOK, 90 Whitfield Street, London W1T 4EZ

Archiboo and HOK’s London Studio are looking for seven architects to pitch problem-solving and entrepreneurial ideas to a panel comprising Usman Haque, David Weatherhead, Savannah de Savray, Nick Searl and Safia Qureshi.

The winner will receive a significant marketing and development support package with a value of almost £5,000 to help take their idea to market. It includes media support and a half-day messaging workshop by global business advisory firm FTI , a half -day digital marketing 101 session led by Digital Storey, a 2-day PR workshop supported by Big Fish Training and a thought leadership masterclass by HOK London Studio.

The panel is looking for self-generated projects with the potential to have a genuine impact. It is especially keen to hear of projects that are socially engaged and have the potential to develop into feasible solutions, from low-cost housing and ideas on how retail property can be recycled to one-off projects that have community or healthy living benefits.

There should be a minimum of five slides that explain the challenge that’s being addressed, its social purpose and proposed outcome.

Projects need not have been professionally costed but the panel would be interested to know about any attempt to access finance such as grants and other forms of funding, including crowd-funding.

As with previous pitches, architects have just three minutes to present, after which the panel will give their feedback and a winner will be announced.

Current examples of architects’ self-generated projects include Studio Octopi’s Thames Pool, AL_A’s Pitch/Pitch and the architect-funded Project Compass, which provides free access to OJEU.

Archiboo founder Amanda Baillieu said:

There’s an abundance of practices generating their own projects. Some of them have a social purpose while others are more entrepreneurial but all of them show architects moving outside their traditional role.

Archiboo is grateful to HOK London for supporting this initiative.

The Architect Pitch is part of the London Festival of Architecture.

If you would like to be considered for the pitch, please fill in the form by June 5th
