Year 2 focuses on boundaries and their relationship to the city and environment, exploring relationships between materials, spaces and environmental systems integrating new and traditional media within speculative architectural design processes.
Based on concepts of transformation and application, Year 2 students developed skills to incorporate both intuitive and rational responses in their designs. An evidence-based approach equipped students with tools to implement environmental design principles over which they could playfully develop their designs.
Four briefs introduced students to increasingly complex scenarios and provided them with the opportunity to learn new digital and analogue tools for understanding, simulating and representing the urban and environmental context with analytical precision. The data underpinning these exercises constituted the foundation for the development of their design proposals.
In Brief 1, students were asked to analyse the historic urban area of The Strand, and specifically the Macadam Building. They were required to communicate both the urban character and key environmental parameters, including light and shadow, temperature patterns and noise pollution. Based on this environmental data, students were asked to develop a mass re-evaluation strategy which informed the design of a new inhabitable 3D Skin/Space. This was further developed in Brief 2 through hybrid material strategies using AI and material prototype experiments.
Briefs 3 and 4 examined the climatic challenges that London is set to face through the design and retrofit of the University of Westminster’s Harrow Campus Halls of Residence, and a proposal for a new campus hub building. The students were asked to emphasise their understanding of the campus as a spatial, social and environmental system, and to translate their analytical data into design. The students’ design proposals had to meet both the University’s immediate needs and the longer term need to regenerate the site to address London’s environmental challenges in 2080.
