Reclaiming the Holy River Cooum: Displacement due to urban river

In its determination to restore the River Cooum back to its original state, the Tamilnadu Government poses a threat to the urban poor. While they struggle to make ends meet, the socio-economic inequalities threaten their social structure, their culture, their rights and lives. Biodiversity, air, water, soil and sea are being used as commodities and this state threatens our common future. This thesis envisions a river front that will be a connective network of open spaces and trails, cultural resources, and recreational opportunities. Residents of all ages and backgrounds will have access to green jobs that support the region’s resilience. Watershed education will be an integral part of public school education in Chennai, fostering generations of stewards.
