The Battle Against Crumble

The Casbah of Algiers has witnessed years of colonisation and numerous invasions throughout history. The dialogue, contradiction and confrontation between the coloniser and the colonised, are best manifested through the urban morphology of the city and its facades. The latter exposes the visible and invisible boundaries that shaped the Casbah over time, separating the city from the citadel. Using film and the technique of mapping, this thesis offers a new reading to the Casbah of Algiers and re-imagines it by stripping it off the dominant colonial powers.
